Ingredients
Scale
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F)
- 2 tbsp active dry yeast
- ¼ cup sugar
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (divided)
- 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy.
- Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, add 3 cups of flour, oil, and salt. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and stir until well combined.
- Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of flour, one-half cup at a time, until the dough begins to pull away from the sides of the bowl.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
- Shape the dough: Punch the dough down, then turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape it into a loaf and place it into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- Cover the pan and let the dough rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until it has risen just above the top of the pan.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). (Optional: brush the top of the dough with a beaten egg for a glossy finish.)
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Let the bread cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then remove from the pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- You can use bread flour for a slightly chewier texture.
- For a sweeter flavor, add a tablespoon of honey or molasses to the dough.
- Store the bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
