Description

A hearty and flavorful dish made with ground beef, potatoes, tomatoes, and a mix of aromatic spices. This savory-sweet Mexican classic is perfect for serving over rice or in tacos.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 lb ground beef
  2. 1 medium potato, peeled and diced
  3. 1/2 cup diced onion
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  6. 1/4 cup raisins (optional for a sweet touch)
  7. 1/4 cup sliced olives
  8. 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  9. 1 tsp chili powder
  10. 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  11. 1/2 cup beef broth
  12. Salt and pepper, to taste
  13. 1 tbsp olive oil for cooking
  14. Fresh cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until browned.
  • Add the diced onion and garlic, cooking for 3-4 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the diced potatoes and cook for another 5 minutes until they begin to soften.
  • Add the diced tomatoes, raisins (if using), olives, cumin, chili powder, cinnamon, and beef broth. Stir to combine.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer, cover, and cook for 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are tender and the flavors have melded together.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground turkey for a leaner version of picadillo.
  • The raisins add a subtle sweetness, but you can omit them if you prefer a more savory flavor.
  • This dish pairs well with rice, tortillas, or as a filling for tacos.
