Description

This rich and comforting Chicken Paprikash is a Hungarian classic featuring tender chicken simmered in a flavorful paprika-infused sauce with sour cream. It’s perfect for a cozy meal, served with noodles or rice.


Ingredients

  • 4 bone-in chicken thighs, skin removed
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp paprika (preferably Hungarian)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Brown Chicken: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Season the chicken with salt and pepper, then brown on both sides, about 5-7 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook Onion & Garlic: In the same pan, add the chopped onion and garlic. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add Paprika & Cumin: Stir in paprika and cumin, and cook for 1 minute to release the flavors.
  4. Simmer Chicken: Return the chicken to the pan. Add chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 25-30 minutes, until the chicken is fully cooked.
  5. Make Sauce: Mix flour with sour cream and add to the pan, stirring well. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  6. Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot with egg noodles or rice.

Notes

  • If you prefer a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or red chili flakes.
  • This dish can also be made with boneless chicken breasts for a quicker cooking time.
  • For an extra creamy sauce, increase the amount of sour cream slightly.
