- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter (plus extra for bread)
- 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
- 8 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Optional: 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
Instructions
- Caramelize Onions: Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft (about 10-12 minutes). Set aside.
- Cook Patties: Form beef into 4 thin patties, season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire (if using). In the same skillet, cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice of cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese between two bread slices (buttered sides facing out).
- Grill Sandwiches: Cook in a skillet or griddle over medium heat until bread is crispy and cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Serve Hot: Slice in half and enjoy warm!
