Description

This timeless diner favorite combines a juicy beef patty, caramelized onions, and melted cheese between crispy toasted bread—comfort food perfection!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend)
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter (plus extra for bread)
  • 8 slices rye bread (or sourdough)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Optional: 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Caramelize Onions: Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft (about 10-12 minutes). Set aside.
  2. Cook Patties: Form beef into 4 thin patties, season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire (if using). In the same skillet, cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned.
  3. Assemble Sandwiches: Butter one side of each bread slice. Place a slice of cheese, beef patty, caramelized onions, and another slice of cheese between two bread slices (buttered sides facing out).
  4. Grill Sandwiches: Cook in a skillet or griddle over medium heat until bread is crispy and cheese is melted, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  5. Serve Hot: Slice in half and enjoy warm!

Notes
