Description

Beef Paprikash is a hearty Hungarian dish featuring tender beef simmered in a rich, paprika-infused sauce. With its smoky, savory flavors, this dish is perfect for cozy dinners and pairs beautifully with egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 lb beef stew meat, cubed
  2. 1 medium onion, chopped
  3. 2 garlic cloves, minced
  4. 2 tbsp paprika (preferably Hungarian sweet paprika)
  5. 1 tsp ground caraway seeds (optional)
  6. 1/2 tsp salt
  7. 1/4 tsp black pepper
  8. 1 cup beef broth
  9. 1/2 cup sour cream
  10. 1 tbsp olive oil
  11. 1 tbsp flour

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add beef cubes and brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove beef and set aside.
  • In the same pot, add onion and garlic, cooking until softened, about 3 minutes.
  • Stir in paprika, caraway seeds (if using), salt, and pepper. Cook for 1-2 minutes to bloom the spices.
  • Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir to form a roux.
  • Slowly add beef broth, stirring to combine. Return beef to the pot and bring to a simmer. Cover and cook for 45-60 minutes, or until beef is tender.
  • Stir in sour cream and cook for an additional 5 minutes until the sauce is creamy.
  • Serve with egg noodles, rice, or mashed potatoes.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, replace sour cream with Greek yogurt.
  • You can also add bell peppers for an extra layer of flavor.
  • This dish improves in flavor after a day, so it’s perfect for leftovers.
