Description

A popular and flavorful Chinese dish, General Tso’s Chicken is made with crispy, tender chicken pieces tossed in a sweet, savory, and slightly spicy sauce. This dish is perfect for a delicious weeknight dinner, served over rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 lb boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces
  2. ½ cup cornstarch
  3. 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  4. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
  6. 3 tbsp soy sauce
  7. 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  8. 3 tbsp sugar
  9. 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  10. 1 tsp chili garlic sauce (optional)
  11. 1 tsp sesame oil
  12. 23 green onions, chopped
  13. 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)

Instructions

  • Coat the chicken pieces in cornstarch, ensuring they’re fully covered.
  • Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken pieces until golden brown and crispy, then remove and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add garlic and ginger. Sauté for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Mix soy sauce, rice vinegar, sugar, hoisin sauce, chili garlic sauce, and sesame oil in a bowl. Pour the sauce into the pan and bring to a simmer.
  • Add the fried chicken back to the pan and toss until evenly coated in the sauce.
  • Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds. Serve hot with rice.

Notes

  • Adjust the level of heat by increasing or decreasing the chili garlic sauce.
  • For a lighter version, you can bake the chicken instead of frying it.
